Working together to support children and young people affected by parental young onset dementia

This webinar was led by Hannah Gardner, Dementia UK’s Consultant Admiral Nurse for Children and Young People and Dr Patricia Masterson-Algar, a research fellow and lecturer at Bangor University, who talked about how progress is being made to improve the support that young people affected by parental young onset dementia receive.

Evidence shows that across the world young people affected by parental young onset dementia are under-supported. This is often due to a lack of research into understanding their unique needs. However, progress is being made and Hannah and Patricia shared this.

Patricia talked about her work developing iSupport for Young People; the first online tool of its kind, providing training and support to this group so they can understand dementia and its impact. Hannah shared professional experience as the first Consultant Admiral Nurse for Children and Young People and Bethan Pound, a young carer for her late mum who had young onset dementia, shared her personal perspective of the support offering for children and young people.

By shining a spotlight onto children and young people that live in families affected by young onset dementia this webinar aimed to bring hope and to continue the conversation in order to increase identification, awareness and ‘fit for purpose’ support initiatives across the UK and the world.
