Age-appropriate support in care homes

The transition into a care home for a person living with young onset dementia and their family can be a particularly challenging and fraught time, as there are very few places that offer the specialist age-appropriate support needed to ensure a supportive and successful move. For most families living with young onset dementia, the reality is that they move the person living with the condition into an environment that is not always able to meet their needs.

Our webinar on Wednesday 12th February 2025 at 12.30-1.30pm will outline the main issues that people living with young onset dementia and their families face when looking for age-appropriate care in a care home. We will consider how adaptations can support age-appropriate care, and how care homes can make changes to support people and families living with the condition.

Panelists will include:

  • Jules Knight, Consultant Admiral Nurse for Young Onset Dementia, Dementia UK
  • Fran Mada, Admiral Nurse, Dementia Oxfordshire
  • Rachel Beckett, Chairman, Wellburn Care Homes
  • a family member with personal experience

Fran Mada interviewed the spouses/partners of people living with young onset dementia who are transitioning into care homes as part of a research study. Her research demonstrated that there was significant uncertainty about what to look for in a care home, and what adjustments can be made to support age-appropriate care. Her research led to the development by Dementia UK of a downloadable leaflet that focuses on the unique and specific needs of younger people in care homes and their families.
