How can a GP help people with young onset dementia?
A good relationship with a GP and GP practice is key to helping a person with young onset dementia and their family navigate the complex systems and pathways for young onset dementia care.
This webinar was led by Dr Nerida Burnie, a general practitioner with a special interest in dementia. It included key points where GPs can help people with young onset dementia including:
How GPs can advocate for change, identify gaps in services and improve the accuracy of prevalence and dementia type data
The challenge of getting a diagnosis
What GPs can do to help people and their family’s post-diagnosis
Dr Burnie also discussed the challenges within the NHS and the need to recognise the important role GPs can have in supporting people with young onset dementia, and promote and support this relationship.
An interview with Martina Davis, who is living with young onset posterior cortical atrophy, offered a personal perspective. Watch a recording of the interview here.
