Young onset dementia – changing perceptions of diagnosis

This webinar was led by Dr Susan Mitchell, Head of Policy at Alzheimer’s Research UK, alongside a panel of experts.

We considered how the preferences of people living with dementia, a shifting political landscape and advances in research and drug discovery can help the dementia diagnosis pathway evolve.

Recent research was presented which suggests a disconnect between what people at risk of developing or living with dementia want, and what their healthcare professionals think they want.

The panel discussed how we can reconcile patient preferences and clinical perceptions and close the gap. Dr Susan Mitchell was joined by:

  • Zac Sherwani provided a family member’s perspective. His father, Imran Sherwani was a gold medal-winning hockey player for Great Britain at the 1988 Olympic games and is living with young onset Alzheimer’s disease
  • Shirley Cramer CBE, Chair of the Rare Dementia Support Advisory Board, University College London
  • Professor Nick Fox, Director of the Dementia Research Centre, University College London, Consultant Neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery
  • Dr M Santhana Krishnan, Chair of Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry, Royal College of Psychiatrists, Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry, Clinical Director for Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust
