Age-appropriate support in care homes
The transition into a care home for a person living with young onset dementia and their family can be a particularly challenging and fraught time, as there are very few places that offer the specialist age-appropriate support needed to ensure a supportive and successful move. For most families living with young onset dementia, the reality is that they move the person living with the condition into an environment that is not always able to meet their needs.
Our webinar outlined the main issues that people living with young onset dementia and their families face when looking for age-appropriate care in a care home and considered how adaptations can support age-appropriate care, and how care homes can make changes to support people and families living with the condition.
Panelists included:
- Jules Knight, Consultant Admiral Nurse for Young Onset Dementia, Dementia UK
- Fran Mada, Admiral Nurse, Age UK / Dementia Oxfordshire
- Rachel Beckett, Chairman, Wellburn Care Homes
- Andy, a family member with personal experience
Fran Mada shared information from a research study where she interviewed the spouses/partners of people living with young onset dementia who were transitioning into care homes. Her research demonstrated that there is significant uncertainty about what to look for in a care home and what adjustments can be made to support age-appropriate care.
Rachel Beckett shared information about Wellburn Care Homes, including their young onset dementia-specific care home offering.
