Member showcase: Young Onset Dementia Group, Cornwall
Part of the Cornwall Memory Cafe Network, this young onset group was set up in 2024 to support people with young onset dementia and their families living in Cornwall.
In 2024, Disability Cornwall recognised the need for a peer support group for younger people with dementia who may still be working, have children at home and therefore have different challenges. They set up a group to provide support and activities tailored to the needs of younger people who want to continue leading active lives and socialise with people going through the same things as them.

Practical advice and emotional support
The group meets once a month in Penzance and the activities are planned to provide both practical advice and emotional support. Members share information with each other about dementia care, benefits and support services in their area. The sessions are therapeutic, fun, supportive and creative. The main purpose is to create peer-led support and community. The group offers a sense of connection and support, helping members feel less isolated by sharing experiences with others who are local and understand their situation.
One member of the group commented, “This group has helped us both on a practical and emotional level and has been absolutely vital.”
Coffee, cake and connection
The group’s activities differ from what you might expect! They always start with coffee and cake which gives everyone a chance to catch up and chat. This connection can make the world of difference.
Each session includes an organised activity and over the last year they have taken part in sound baths, aromatherapy, massage workshops, breathing and meditation sessions and eco-art drawing. These activities are designed to be enjoyable and therapeutic. External experts are invited in for many of these sessions.

They also enjoy active days out in the beautiful local area to make the most of the great outdoors and stunning Cornish scenery. The members are able to contribute ideas for the activities and make suggestions for what they would like to do.
The group is planning to expand over the coming year, welcoming new members with a range of new and different activities.
Overall they aim to create a space tailored to younger people with dementia to offer connection, support and a sense of belonging.
